Each year since 2007, the art-focused cable network Ovation has delivered us a Battle of the Nutcrackers at Christmastime, programming back-to-back stagings of the beloved production. Audiences can watch as Claras toss their slippers to take down the rat king with Berlin’s Staatsballett, London’s Royal Ballet, and other companies. Costumes change, the sets vary, and yes, even the choreography is unique. This year, Ovation is airing the ballet as performed by the Czech National Ballet in 2017 (the company’s artistic director, Petr Zuska, delivers a touch of modernity to the classic staging) and St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theater ballet in 2012, starring Alina Somova and Vladimir Shklyarov. The latter is especially worth watching as the Mariinsky is where The Nutcracker was born in 1892. See them both here.
